Local pet businesses, it all starts with an introduction.

Do you know of every dog professional in your area? Every groomer, walker, boarder, trainer, behaviourist, product manufacturer? Do they know you? Have you spoken to them? Are you friendly with them? Do you support each other?

I imagine the answer for many of you is “no” to the first question, rendering the subsequent questions void. There are so many dog-related enterprises popping up all the time, it’s hard to keep track. The saturation of dog trainers, for a dog trainer, may appear threatening, you might others as competition. However being friendly with and maybe even teaming up with your “competitors” may actually benefit the both of you.

No two dog trainers have the same training style, personality, experience and qualifications. Some trainers may be outgoing and enthusiastic, others may take a more calm and methodical approach. Some may specialise in big classes, others may prefer 1-2-1s, some may only be able to teach on weekdays, others only on weekends. Instead of viewing other trainers as something to be afraid of, reach out to them. See if you can meet up with them, watch each other teach. Familiarise yourself with their training style. Then, if you feel comfortable, when a client comes to you who may not benefit from your training style, class layout, weekly schedule or if you just believe they are better suited for another local trainer that you know and trust, you can refer them on.

It may seem counter productive at first, to send clients to somebody else, but if you build up strong relationships, it will pay off when they send you clients that are suited to you.

Plus, many of us have our niches. If you are a puppy or life-stages trainer, it makes sense to connect with people who specialise in agility or scent-work or trick training. Then, when pups or dogs finish their preliminary training they can be sent on to more advanced classes run by a trainer you know will train them in a way you agree with.

Because if you are good at what you do, other local trainers aren’t threats, they aren’t competition. They are connections. Connections that one day could also be friends.

Trainers aside, reach out to local manufacturers. People who make dog toys, food, coats, collars. Ask them if you can test out their products and in exchange, if you are happy with the quality, you can recommend it to your clients.

We can create a network of connections, all supporting each other and benefitting from each other.

Because we in the dog industry get a bad rep. We are often seen as unsociable and insular. This puts people off. We shouldn’t be arguing amongst ourselves. There are enough clients to go around.
